Wivan Fagerudd, mezzo-soprano

Wivan Fagerudd studied at the Sibelius Academy’s Department of Vocal Music, where her teacher was Annika Ollinkari. She graduated as Master of Music with excellent grade. Later she has studied with Professors Dorothy Irving and Jeffrey Goldberg. She has also specialized in the interpretation of baroque music with Mark Tatlow and Susanne Norin.

Wivan Fagerudd regularly performs with several of the best symphony and chamber orchestras in Finland. She is an oratorio soloist in great demand, and has performed with, among others, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Kymi Sinfonietta, Pori Sinfonietta and the City orchestras of Helsinki, Oulu, Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki, Lappeenranta and Vaasa.

Her large repertoire of oratorios comprises essential works as Dixit Dominus and Messiah by G.F. Handel, St. John Passion, St. Matthews Passion, Magnificat, St. Mark Passion, B minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, Cantata no 170 “Vergnügte Ruh”, Mass F major, A major, G major and G minor by J.S. Bach, Requiem by Duruflé and by Mozart, Stabat Mater by Haydn, Paulus and Elias by Mendelssohn, Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, “Petite Messe Solennelle” by Rossini, Oratorio de Noêl by Saint-Saëns and Gloria and Stabat Mater by Vivaldi. She has also performed opera-arias, songs with orchestral accompaniment, popular songs from musicals, and more unusual pieces such as Telemann’s amusing “Kanarienvogelkantate”.

Ms Fagerudd has worked with many conductors; John Storgårds, Arvo Vollmer, Dmitri Slobodeniouk, Patrick Gallois, Tõnu Kaljuste, Juhani Lamminmäki, Michael Christie, Anna-Maria Helsing, Hannu Norjanen and Nils Schweckendiek to mention a few.

Madame Butterfly (Wivan Fagerudd)

Ms Fagerudd highly enjoys being on the opera stage and has successfully performed Dido (Purcell: Dido et Aeneas), Amastris (Handel: Xerxes), Dorabella (Mozart: Così fan tutte), Flora Bervoix (Verdi: Traviata). She appeared in the first performances of Eero Erkkilä’s “Kalastaja-ooppera” (2000) as The maid, and had great success as Meri Perttilä in Ilkka Kuusisto’s “Kuninkaan Sormus” (2002). Her most recent appearance was the role of Suzuki in Vaasa Opera’s production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly 2005 (directed by Neeme Kuningas), which was unanimously praised by critics.

At the Lilla Teatern in Helsinki she performed the leading role of Bengt Ahlfors’ musical ”Stulen Lycka”, and at the Wasa Teater she performed Jenny’s role in director Johanna Garpe’s surprisingly modern interpretation of Kurt Weill’s opera Mahagonny.

Ms Fagerudd has recorded with the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera among others, and she has also established a reputation as a sensitive recitalist.
