Wivan Fagerudd, mezzo-soprano
Wivan
Fagerudd studied at the Sibelius Academy’s Department of Vocal
Music, where her teacher was Annika Ollinkari. She graduated as
Master of Music with excellent grade. Later she has studied with
Professors Dorothy Irving and Jeffrey Goldberg. She has also specialized
in the interpretation of baroque music with Mark Tatlow and Susanne
Norin.
Wivan Fagerudd regularly performs with several of the best symphony
and chamber orchestras in Finland. She is an oratorio soloist in
great demand, and has performed with, among others, Lahti Symphony
Orchestra, Kymi Sinfonietta, Pori Sinfonietta and the City orchestras
of Helsinki, Oulu, Kuopio, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki,
Lappeenranta and Vaasa.
Her large repertoire of oratorios comprises essential works as
Dixit Dominus and Messiah by G.F. Handel, St. John Passion, St.
Matthews Passion, Magnificat, St. Mark Passion, B minor Mass, Christmas
Oratorio, Cantata no 170 “Vergnügte Ruh”, Mass
F major, A major, G major and G minor by J.S. Bach, Requiem by Duruflé
and by Mozart, Stabat Mater by Haydn, Paulus and Elias by Mendelssohn,
Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, “Petite Messe Solennelle”
by Rossini, Oratorio de Noêl by Saint-Saëns and Gloria
and Stabat Mater by Vivaldi. She has also performed opera-arias,
songs with orchestral accompaniment, popular songs from musicals,
and more unusual pieces such as Telemann’s amusing “Kanarienvogelkantate”.
Ms Fagerudd has worked with many conductors; John Storgårds,
Arvo Vollmer, Dmitri Slobodeniouk, Patrick Gallois, Tõnu
Kaljuste, Juhani Lamminmäki, Michael Christie, Anna-Maria Helsing,
Hannu Norjanen and Nils Schweckendiek to mention a few.

Ms Fagerudd highly enjoys being on the opera stage and has successfully
performed Dido (Purcell: Dido et Aeneas), Amastris (Handel: Xerxes),
Dorabella (Mozart: Così fan tutte), Flora Bervoix (Verdi:
Traviata). She appeared in the first performances of Eero Erkkilä’s
“Kalastaja-ooppera” (2000) as The maid, and had great
success as Meri Perttilä in Ilkka Kuusisto’s “Kuninkaan
Sormus” (2002). Her most recent appearance was the role of
Suzuki in Vaasa Opera’s production of Puccini’s Madama
Butterfly 2005 (directed by Neeme Kuningas), which was unanimously
praised by critics.
At the Lilla Teatern in Helsinki she performed the leading role
of Bengt Ahlfors’ musical ”Stulen Lycka”, and
at the Wasa Teater she performed Jenny’s role in director
Johanna Garpe’s surprisingly modern interpretation of Kurt
Weill’s opera Mahagonny.
Ms Fagerudd has recorded with the Orchestra of the Finnish National
Opera among others, and she has also established a reputation as
a sensitive recitalist.
