Antti Rissanen, trombonist
Trombonist, Composer, Arranger, Conductor and Lecturer Antti Rissanen is one of the few jazz trombonists in Europe who works internationally as a soloist with several big bands. His international career took off in 1995 after winning second prize in the Frankfurt Radio Big Band composition competition in Germany. He has won first prize in the Frank Rosolino Jazz Trombone Competition (1998, USA), and the “Rich Matteson” Jazz Competition (2001, Finland). Rissanen was also chosen as brass player of the year at the Lieksa Brass Week 2002.
Rissanen has worked widely around Europe, in recent years specially in Austria and Germany. He has worked with Bill Watrous, Jimmy Smith, Charles Tolliver, Randy Brecker, Jack Walrath, Ingrid Jensen, Peter Herbolzheimer, Ted Trimble and Gene Calderazzo. He plays the Jiggs Whigham model King Silver Sonic (2b) slide trombone with a Sterling bell.The critics have acclaimed Antti Rissanen's great command of his very demanding instrument, the slide trombone, and the personal voice he achieves with it. Rissanen has become well known as the leader of the group called Mr Fonebone. Mr Fonebone will release its new album "Hit and Run" at the Turku Jazz Festival on 9 March 2007.
