Teppo Lampela, countertenor
Teppo Lampela has studied singing at Sibelius Academy with Marjut Hannula and in master classes with Evelyn Tubb, Michael Fields, Andreas Scholl, Kevin Smith, Carl Høgset and Oren Brown. In 2005, he won first prize at the Lohja Tenor Competition in Finland.
To the Finns, Lampela is a well known performer of music by J.S. Bach, Handel, Pergolesi, Buxtehude and Arvo Pärt. On stage, he has appeared as Apollo in the Finnish premiere of W.A. Mozart’s Apollo et Hyacinthus at Sibelius Academy and as Oberon in B. Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Stadia Opera in Helsinki. In autumn 2005, he sang in Stockholm in Bach’s Mass in B Minor under the baton of Fredrik Malmberg and in Helsinki in the concert of European Broadcasting Union (EBU) among others.
In Spring 2007 he will be heard at the Kirkko Soikoon (”Let the church sound”) Festival with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra. The programme includes church music by Buxtehude, Pachelbel and J.S. Bach. Among others, his other engagements include a large tour with the Finnish baroque ensemble, Battalia.
His wide repertoire of alto solo’s include the most important church music works: J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion, Mass in B Minor, Easter Oratorio, Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio as well as numerous cantatas, G. F. Handel’s oratorios Messiah and Jephtha, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in G major and Mass in D minor. Other important solo work includes Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, D. Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri and many early baroque cantatas.
Teppo Lampela has appeared as a soloist with many choirs and many of the most important orchestras in Finland. He has sung in the Radio Chamber Choir between 1993 and 2005 and in several operatic productions in the extra choir of the Finnish National Opera. He has also performed as a baritone soloist in many church music works. His vocal talent and musicality have made him into a much sought-after vocal, vocal interpretation and ensemble singing coach. He has also lent his voice to many animated films at the Finnish Broadcasting Company. In addition, Lampela has acted as producer for many acclaimed recordings, for example, Mysterium and Gravity with the Lumen Valo vocal ensemble, Maailma jääkukkien takana with the KYL Male Choir and Salvat 1701 with the Tapiola Chamber Choir. Teppo Lampela’s own recordings include the aforementioned St. John Passion by Arvo Pärt with the Candomino Choir for Finlandia Records.
