Tom Nyman, tenor

tom nymanTom Nyman first studied language at Vaasa University, but then changed to music studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. His opera debut was in 1989 as Tamino in Mozart’s Magic Flute in his home town Vaasa.

Nyman’s first appearance at the Finnish National Opera was in 1990 as Prince in Trailescu’s opera Puss in Boots. Since then he has made regular apperances there in Mozart roles like Tamino and Don Basilio in the Marriage of Figaro, as Medoro in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino, Elemer in Arabella by R.Strauss and in many roles in world premieres of Finnish operas. Nyman has performed the part of Tamino over 200 times in several different productions, including the Finnish National Opera, the Savonlinna Opera Festival in a production by August Everding and in The Little Magic Flute at The Vantaa Opera. During the 1990’s his other opera roles included Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Fenton (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Victor von Sonnig (The House of the Sun). Outside Finland he has also performed in Germany (Berlin and Potsdam) and in Estonia.

In December 2005 Tom Nyman’s new CD was released by Polyhymnia. The CD includes music by Benjamin Britten; Serenade Op. 31 for tenor, horn and strings with the Finnish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Susanna Mälkki. The CD also includes Britten’s songs with piano accompaniment. The pianist is Gustav Djupsjöbacka. In February 2007 BIS released the latest Sibelius CD by The Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä, "The Origin of Fire".

In Autumn 2006 Nyman was heard in the premiere of new Finnish opera by Mikko Heiniö, "The hour of Serpent" and as Gomatz in Mozart's Zaide at the Finnish National Opera. In Spring 2007 his engagements include the role of Banér in the first Finnish Opera ever, "Hunt of King Charles" by Fredrik Pacius. He will also sing the role of Lensky in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at the Jyväskylä and Mikkeli, Finland. In Autumn 2007 he returned to the role of Gomatz in the Finnish National Opera.

Tom Nyman is one of the most sought after concert tenors in Finland. His repertoire includes all the most important solo parts in oratorios and passions of Bach, Haydn, Handel and Mozart. Nyman has also a strong relationship with the famous Finnish choir Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat (YL Male Voice Choir). Several recordings and concert tours to the USA, Japan, France and Great Britain are the fruit of his co-operation with them. Nyman has performed as a soloist in the Rautavaara’s Vigilia at the Schleswig-Holsteinin Music Festival in Germany. He has also sung Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the BBB Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Northern Festival in Scotland. In Summer 2005 he gave recital concerts in the city of Foiano in Tuscany and at the Palaces of St. Petersburg festival. Nyman has performed with renowned international conductors such as Peter Schreier, Roy Goodman, Harry Christophers, Sakari Oramo, Mikko Franck, Osmo Vänskä and with many other internationally well known Finnish conductors like Jorma Panula, Ralf Gothoni, Okko Kamu, Hannu Lintu, John Storgårds, Juha Kangas and Ulf Söderblom.

Tom Nyman has made CD recordings for labels BIS, Ondine, Finlandia and Polyhymnia, including the world premiere recording of Shostakovich Suite on Finnish Themes with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Juha Kangas.
